“What took you so long?” I grumbled, turning to confront my Identical.

She stood with her hands in the pockets of her shorts and shrugged. “I was busy.”

“Doing what?”

“Rattling around in your subconscious,” she replied, rolling her eyes. I couldn’t miss the sarcastic edge to her tone.

I’d grown steadily more frustrated throughout the day, and I needed to work out. My morning had gone from bad to worse. It had started with a late drinks delivery from my supplier, half of the order missing and several out-of-date crates included, to a faulty beer keg which had exploded all over the cellar. Once I’d cleaned up the mess that had ruined my new boots, two of my staff members had called in sick and two light bulbs had blown above the bar.

By the time I’d changed them and satisfied myself that I was ready to open the club, the grin on my face had been replaced with a grimace when I noticed the broken pool table with three of the balls missing and a large tear in the cloth.

At that point, I’d threw my hands up in despair, snatched up my bag, and stalked off. Cody could open the club on his own. I had energy to burn, and besides Emilia, my Identical was the only other person strong enough to give me a challenge. Emilia was currently unavailable, teaching martial arts in a room at the opposite end of the gym. She’d invited me to join in, but I wasn’t in the mood for a group class.

She’d taken one look at the annoyance on my face and threw me the keys to her private boxing ring. It would be empty, ready and waiting for me to unleash my anger on the world.

Or my Identical, at the very least.
