“You haven’t heard of piezoelectricity?” Harry asked, standing with her hands on her hips. I stared at her blankly.

She rolled her eyes. “It’s the production of electricity by applying pressure.” She squatted at the corner of the dance floor, pointing to a square of coloured glass. “Certain crystals such as quartz, are piezoelectric. That means that when they are compressed or struck, they generate an electrical charge.” There was another awkward silence, and Harry looked up. “You still have no idea what I’m talking about, do you?”

I shook my head.

She chuckled. “You put pressure on the crystals and they generate a spark. Ergo, you stand here—” she stood and placed her foot on the coloured square, which lit up a bright yellow, “—and you get light. Ta-dah.” She removed her foot and stood proudly. “I’ve wanted to get the dance floor updated for ages.”

“Oh, I see.” I nodded. “That’s pretty cool.”

Harry held out her hands. “I’m full of surprises.”

“Yes, you are,” I replied, glancing at my watch. “I better go.” Finding my bag and jacket on a bar stool, I tugged them on as I prepared to drive home. I’d been on the early shift this morning, and there had been engineers in all day. I’d been too busy counting stock and cleaning cocktail menus to ask what they were doing.

Harry nodded, squatting down again as I made my way to the door.

“Bye,” I called back, but Harry didn’t respond. She’d zoned out, inspecting the shiny new lights, and I rolled my eyes as I pulled the door closed behind me.
